Community Blog: Strange Magic Apparel & Co.
Small businesses not only add value to our economy, but they also add personality to our community. At Helix House, we value their insight and want to get to know them, as well as explore what role small business advertising plays in the daily life of a local business owner here in the valley. So, get out your flying carpet because our first local business does not hold back on magic.Scotty Cummings and Adam Garcia are the two parts of Strange Magic Apparel & Co., a Phoenix-based apparel store. Strange Magic takes whimsical and enchanting designs and combines them with streetwear, so those who believe in magic can express their inner spellbinding selves.
What is the story behind your business? Where did the inspiration come from?
Scotty: It was a long time passion for both of us that we wanted to explore. It was a way for Adam to showcase some of his artwork and for us to inspire others through wearing cool clothing they like, but the foundation and backbone for Strange Magic was expressing and exploring the creative process. The brand is really built on connecting people to create and inspire one another, thus shaping the world around us.
What forms of advertising do you use to promote business?
Scotty: We use different social media platforms (Instagram and Facebook) and then word of mouth. Word of mouth is a big one for us, just utilizing our friends and our network and getting out there. We have made flyers and business cards and a lot of stickers for some of the guerilla marketing. Also events; we try to have a presence at a lot of events in the valley like Phoenix Flea and other little pop up shops. It is a great way to meet new people and introduce them to the brand.
Do you plan on making any changes to your business at this time?
Scotty: Not really; I think we are going to stay pretty consistent and lay low while being sensitive to the situation out there right now. We are going to continue working in the background and keep in touch with our followers and customers.Adam: We’re always exploring new ways to make advertising work for us. It can be a struggle being a local clothing company where those necessarily aren’t the most successful types of businesses, but we’re always trying to find different things we can do to help get that word of mouth out. We’ve found it’s very strong when people start to hear about us and know what we stand for.
In regards to the coronavirus situation, how do you plan on staying connected to your fan base?
Scotty: For us, our brand is founded on passion, creativity and collaboration. Just the other day, we worked on a collaborative playlist on Spotify for people to listen to while they are at home. We’re just really encouraging others to utilize this time to explore some of their passions and create things. We’re trying to be a leading voice in that as far as positivity through this time.Adam: We obviously wouldn’t launch a new line right now, in the thick of everything, but we do plan to stay constant on social media, reach out to others, helping where we can and just trying to spread that with positivity in a landscape of a lot of worries.Strange Magic is Phoenix’s bewitching, yet empowering, streetwear clothing line. Their shop offers tees, hoodies, pins, hats, stickers and totes for both men and women looking to add a little enchantment to their style.
